To celebrate Lá Glas, we enjoyed performing some of our tin whistle tunes for the whole school: Dawning of the Day, Spancil Hill, Kerry Polka, Óró sé do bheatha bhaile & Inis Oírr. Well done to all in 3rd & 4th Class!

Three of our very talented Irish dancers from 4th Class, put on a spectacular performance for the whole school! We are very proud of their super talent – Well done girls!

World Book DayWe brought in a book to share with the Junior and Senior Infants. We enjoyed visiting their classroom and spending some quality time reading and chatting about some beautiful books.

Science- Digestion

We explored the different steps involved in the Digestive System. We particularly enjoyed the experiment ‘Digestion in a Bag’.

1st February 2026 – Lá Fhéile Bhríde 

We enjoyed listening to the story of St Brigid. We are proud that our school and local church are named after this great saint. We made some St Brigid’s Crosses in class! 

January 2026  Leonardo Da Vinci

In History we were learning about Leonardo Da Vinci, born April 15, 1452 near Vinci, Florence (Italy). He was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect and engineer. His notebooks reveal a spirit of scientific enquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of their time. His ‘Last Supper’ [1495-98] and Mona Lisa (1503-19) are among the most widely popular and influential paintings of the Renaissance. We are delighted to show you our brilliant Mona Lisa masterpieces!!

Vivaldi  (Italian Composer)

In Music, we were learning about the famous Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi. The ‘Four Seasons’, one of the best known of Vivaldi’s works is a group of four violin concerti, each of which gives musical expression to the four seasons of the year. We focused on the first two movements in Winter.  Unusually for the time, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying poems (sonnets). We explored the sonnet for Winter and drew our own thoughts, images and feelings of what the music represented for us. Here they are!!

Science Week – 3rd and 4th 

We completed many enjoyable and interesting Science activities.  Here are some of the following topics we explored in class with photographs attached:   

  • Electricity- ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’
  • Height and Shoe Size- A Scientific Survery
  • Acrobatic Clowns
  • Our Reaction Time
  • Spiralling Snakes
  • Amazing Triangles                                                                          

Electricity – We learned all about the Stay Safe, Stay Clear campaign – a public safety campaign by ESB Networks which reminded us all to stay away from electricity wires and equipment, especially if they are damaged.  The campaign emphasizes not touching fallen or low-hanging wires, which are always live and dangerous. We designed some posters for the ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’ ESB Networks poster campaign.

Height and Shoe Size – A Scientific Survey                                                                                   

We talked about how the human foot had to do a lot of things. It has to keep us upright and balanced. It has to be strong in order to take all our weight and to help us  balance. We wanted to investigate the following idea in our class – Do taller people have larger feet and shorter people have smaller feet? We predicted what we thought the answer to this would be.        In groups, we measured our heights and recorded our shoe sizes in a table. 

Acrobatic Clowns                                                                                                                                     

We experimented with some ‘Acrobatic Clowns’. We learnt that all objects have a balancing point which is called the centre of gravity. The lower the centre of gravity, the more stable the object will be. At first, we found that balancing the clown on its nose was difficult but when we lowered the centre of gravity by attaching coins to the hands of the clown, it made the clown appear to be doing a handstand and the clown was able to balance on our fingers.

 

Reaction Time                                                                                                                   

Reaction Time is defined as the length of time taken for a person to respond to a given stimulus or event. In this experiment, using the forefinger and thumb, the ‘dropper’ had to drop the reaction rod and we recorded the ‘catcher’s’ reaction time. We recorded our results using our dominant and non-dominant hand. 

‘Amazing Triangles’                                                                                                                               

We explored ‘Amazing Triangles. We used mini marshmallows and cocktail sticks to construct some 2D & 3D shapes. We learned how using a brace diagonally across the square can create a much stronger shape. We attempted to make important landmarks like The Eiffel Tower or Big Ben

Spiralling Snakes                                                                                                            We made some ‘Spiralling Snakes’. These were hung above the radiator and we watched them spiral around. We learned that this is due to the warm air rising from the radiator and the cold air gathering below. When the warm and cold air meet, it creates a convection current. The warm air makes the snakes spiral. 

  Maths Week 2025                        We enjoyed using our ‘Maths eyes’ to observe the Maths around us in our school and local environment. We created some ‘Car Registration’ Maths for 1st and 2nd Class, as well as some number problems for Junior and Senior Infants. This generated great ‘Maths Talk’ between the different classes in our school.

Halloween 2025 

Here are our spooky Halloween windows! We enjoyed using oil pastels and black markers to create a bold and vibrant effect! They all look amazing!

 

Art – Famous Artists (September/October 2025) 

We enjoyed looking at the work of some famous artists. These included Piet Mondrian and Tim Burton. Both artists are very different. Piet Mondrian’s style is abstract, geometric and structured. He worked with straight black lines forming rectangles filled with the primary colours (red, blue, white) and yellow. Tim Burton’s style is gothic, with eerie and quirky characters.             We hope you enjoy looking at our Piet Mondrian and Tim Burton inspired Art pieces!

Viking Projects

We have been learning all about the Vikings. We did some research at home as well and completed lovely, interesting projects about the Vikings. We designed our own Viking shields as well.

We discussed our favourite memories from 2021 and what we are looking forward to this year. We set some individual goals for 2022 and created some beautiful scratch artwork.
