1st February 2026 – Lá Fhéile Bhríde
We enjoyed listening to the story of St Brigid. We are proud that our school and local church are named after this great saint. We made some St Brigid’s Crosses in class!

January 2026 Leonardo Da Vinci
In History we were learning about Leonardo Da Vinci, born April 15, 1452 near Vinci, Florence (Italy). He was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect and engineer. His notebooks reveal a spirit of scientific enquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of their time. His ‘Last Supper’ [1495-98] and Mona Lisa (1503-19) are among the most widely popular and influential paintings of the Renaissance. We are delighted to show you our brilliant Mona Lisa masterpieces!!

Vivaldi (Italian Composer)
In Music, we were learning about the famous Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi. The ‘Four Seasons’, one of the best known of Vivaldi’s works is a group of four violin concerti, each of which gives musical expression to the four seasons of the year. We focused on the first two movements in Winter. Unusually for the time, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying poems (sonnets). We explored the sonnet for Winter and drew our own thoughts, images and feelings of what the music represented for us. Here they are!!

Santa’s Visit – 19th December 2025! Wishing everyone a very happy and safe Christmas!

Winter/Christmas – December 2025
Here are some of our Christmas/Winter Art and Craft pieces.

Science Week – 3rd and 4th
We completed many enjoyable and interesting Science activities. Here are some of the following topics we explored in class with photographs attached:
- Electricity- ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’
- Height and Shoe Size- A Scientific Survery
- Acrobatic Clowns
- Our Reaction Time
- Spiralling Snakes
- Amazing Triangles
Electricity – We learned all about the Stay Safe, Stay Clear campaign – a public safety campaign by ESB Networks which reminded us all to stay away from electricity wires and equipment, especially if they are damaged. The campaign emphasizes not touching fallen or low-hanging wires, which are always live and dangerous. We designed some posters for the ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’ ESB Networks poster campaign.

Creating our own Circuits

Height and Shoe Size – A Scientific Survey
We talked about how the human foot had to do a lot of things. It has to keep us upright and balanced. It has to be strong in order to take all our weight and to help us balance. We wanted to investigate the following idea in our class – Do taller people have larger feet and shorter people have smaller feet? We predicted what we thought the answer to this would be. In groups, we measured our heights and recorded our shoe sizes in a table.

Acrobatic Clowns
We experimented with some ‘Acrobatic Clowns’. We learnt that all objects have a balancing point which is called the centre of gravity. The lower the centre of gravity, the more stable the object will be. At first, we found that balancing the clown on its nose was difficult but when we lowered the centre of gravity by attaching coins to the hands of the clown, it made the clown appear to be doing a handstand and the clown was able to balance on our fingers.

Reaction Time
Reaction Time is defined as the length of time taken for a person to respond to a given stimulus or event. In this experiment, using the forefinger and thumb, the ‘dropper’ had to drop the reaction rod and we recorded the ‘catcher’s’ reaction time. We recorded our results using our dominant and non-dominant hand.

‘Amazing Triangles’
We explored ‘Amazing Triangles. We used mini marshmallows and cocktail sticks to construct some 2D & 3D shapes. We learned how using a brace diagonally across the square can create a much stronger shape. We attempted to make important landmarks like The Eiffel Tower or Big Ben

Spiralling Snakes We made some ‘Spiralling Snakes’. These were hung above the radiator and we watched them spiral around. We learned that this is due to the warm air rising from the radiator and the cold air gathering below. When the warm and cold air meet, it creates a convection current. The warm air makes the snakes spiral.
Maths Week 2025 We enjoyed using our ‘Maths eyes’ to observe the Maths around us in our school and local environment. We created some ‘Car Registration’ Maths for 1st and 2nd Class, as well as some number problems for Junior and Senior Infants. This generated great ‘Maths Talk’ between the different classes in our school.

Halloween 2025
Here are our spooky Halloween windows! We enjoyed using oil pastels and black markers to create a bold and vibrant effect! They all look amazing!

Art – Famous Artists (September/October 2025)
We enjoyed looking at the work of some famous artists. These included Piet Mondrian and Tim Burton. Both artists are very different. Piet Mondrian’s style is abstract, geometric and structured. He worked with straight black lines forming rectangles filled with the primary colours (red, blue, white) and yellow. Tim Burton’s style is gothic, with eerie and quirky characters. We hope you enjoy looking at our Piet Mondrian and Tim Burton inspired Art pieces!

School Tour
Christmas
Christmas is magical here in Scoil Bhríde, Mountnugent and we want to share that magic with you! 3rd & 4th class have been getting all set and ready for Christmas during the month of December. We’ve been doing some Christmas Art, decorating our classroom, playing some Christmas songs/games and visited the crib in the parish church. We also performed some Christmas songs and jingles for our parents on Thursday 15th December. We sang ‘Rockin Around the Christmas Tree’, It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, a poem called The Fourth Wise Man, Snow is falling and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. We had great fun performing for our familes and everyone enjoyed being back together again for the annual Christmas performances. We went for a walk down to our beautifully decorated village were we saw all the beautiful Christmas decorations created by local people. It really got us into the Christmas spirit! We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Autumn Art

In Art, we created an Autumn display. We talked about the different types of trees and the animals preparing to hibernate. We went on a nature walk around the school with Mrs. McEvoy and collected different types of leaves for our art. We placed the various leaves on the paper and painted around them using autumnal colours to create an outline for each leaf. We also created hedgehogs for our Autumn display. Students coloured in hedgehogs, cut them out and stuck them onto a blue background. They also cut out triangles from different coloured card (red, orange and yellow) to represent the leaves that have fallen from the trees. The triangles were glued around the hedgehog to show the hedgehog hibernating amongst the leaves.

3rd and 4th class had a great day in their Halloween costumes playing games and learning about Halloween traditions. A huge effort was made with all the costumes this year and everyone looked fantastic (although some were scary!) To end the day, we watched a scary movie with some treats. Happy Halloween!
Debating

This week we discussed debating. As a class, we discussed a topic to debate and had a for and an against for the argument. Our argument was “Homework should banned from school”. It was very interesting to hear both sides of the argument. Debates are important in oral language as they develop a child’s ability to argue a point of view, a skill that is valuable in many aspects of life. These activities allow them to become better debaters through time and help them become critical thinkers, expressing their opinions and thoughts and gaining self-confidence. This activity was hugely popular amongst the students. It was wonderful to see the fantastic level of teamwork and preparation the classes put into their pieces.
Rugby with Jon

Friendship week took place from the 26th – 30th September. During this week, students engaged and enjoyed all sorts of activities as we focused on what it means to be a friend and to have friends. 3rd and 4th class designed a friendship flower during their Art class. In each petal, students wrote the different qualities of what makes a good friend. They also hosted a friendship lunch where they all brought in some yummy treats to share amongst eachother. During the friendship lunch, students got to move around the classroom, talk to different people and create new friendships within the classroom. The students really enjoyed this! A huge thank you to all the parents who provided some treats and baked goods for the children for their friendship lunch! It went down a treat!!
Easter Egg Hunt

We had great fun solving some clues to help us find the Easter eggs!
We watched a movie and enjoyed some of our treats before finishing up for the holidays.
The Solar System

Here are our projects on the different planets in The Solar System. We worked together in groups to complete these and then presented them to the rest of the class. We wrote reports about the Sun and painted lovely planet pictures.
